How to photograph your products with your phone, no studio
Last updated:
A clear photo shows your product as it is and reduces the customer's questions and doubts. To get one with your phone: shoot near a window in daylight, on a simple background, from a steady angle, wipe the camera lens first, then photograph the whole product and then its details. You do not need a studio or equipment.
Why the photo matters
The customer cannot touch the product, so the photo is all they see. A dark or unclear photo makes them doubt or ask, and a clear photo answers many of their questions before they ask.
Avoid
- Yellow indoor light or flash
- A busy background
- The product cut off at the edge
Better
- Daylight from a window at the side
- A plain, clean background
- Space around the product
Light
- Shoot near a window in daylight.
- Avoid strong direct sun and avoid the flash.
- Let the light come from the side of the product, not from behind it.
- If you can, do not shoot under yellow indoor light, because it changes the colours of the product.
Background
- Choose a simple, clean background: a cloth, a sheet of paper or a light table.
- Move away anything that has nothing to do with the product.
- Pick a colour that differs from the product's colour so it stands out.
- Use the same background for all your products, so your page looks tidy.
Camera and angle
- Wipe the phone lens with a soft cloth before shooting.
- Rest the phone on a book or a stand so the photo does not shake.
- Leave space around the product, because stores crop the photo to a square.
- Do not use digital zoom, move closer to the product yourself.
What to photograph
- A full photo of the product from the front.
- A close photo of the details: the material, the stitching, the logo.
- A photo that shows the real size, next to a hand or a familiar object.
- A photo for each colour or size if the look is different.
- A full photo from the front
- A close photo of the details
- A photo that shows the real size
- A photo for each colour or size
After shooting
- Pick only the clearest photo and do not upload duplicates.
- Raise the brightness a little if the photo is dark, without changing the product's colour.
- Do not add strong filters that change the colour, so the customer is not surprised on delivery.
- Keep the original on your phone.
Common mistakes
- Dark or blurry photos.
- A filter that changes the colour of the product.
- A busy background that distracts.
- A cropped photo that hides part of the product.
- Only one photo for a product with several colours.
How Tisawag helps
In Tisawag you upload your product photos straight from your phone, and the store shrinks them so it opens fast. You can pick several photos at once, and the AI suggests the name, description and category while you check everything and type the price. There is an option that improves the photos a little without changing the product's colour, and an option to clean the background to white within a monthly limit. And every colour or size has its own photo.
Common questions
- Do I need a professional camera?
- No. A recent phone is enough with good light and a clean lens.
- When is a good time to shoot?
- In the morning or afternoon near a window, because the light is soft.
- How many photos do I need for each product?
- A full photo and one or two for the details are usually enough, and one for each colour or size if the look is different.
- Does improving the photos change my product's colour?
- No. The improve option in Tisawag raises the brightness and contrast a little in the same way for all colours, so the product's colour does not change.
